Last week, Home Room started giving the playgroup kids homework for the weekend. They brought home the task on Wednesday which was due Monday. Their teacher encourages the parents to include the child in the home work and not just do it for them. As parents, we also believe that this will help shape their working habits in the future. So I read the assignment.
Pets are their topic for this month. So the requirement for their assignment is to pick a nursery rhyme and replace the lyrics with your own focusing on pets or animals as the main topic. Ha, I was excited to start this since we’ve been observing how Yui puts her day to day routine and even mundane tasks into a song. She even composed a playgroup song that I thought was a real one (taught by her teachers) when I first heard it.
I brainstormed with Yui and first asked her what nursery rhyme she wants to sing.
Mommy: “What’s your favorite nursery rhyme? Old Macdonald?”
Yui: “No.”
Mommy: “ABC? Twinkle Twinkle?”
Yui: “No. No.”
Yui: “Ah, I want Baa Baa Black Sheep!”
Mommy: “Okay, Baa Baa Black Sheep it is. What pet do you want to sing about? Hamster (this is their pet topic at the Home Room)”
Yui: “No.”
Mommy: “Dog? Cat?”
Yui: “No. No. I want rabbit!”
So, rabbit it is. We then proceeded with creating our masterpiece. Yui dictated the words and will sing it to the tune of Baa Baa Black Sheep. I would then add in some words if the lyrics do not fit into the melody. After about 15 minutes, our very own composition is done. With some freebie bears on the side and Yui’s own title to boot.
The Sheep, the Rabbit and the Bear
(to the tune of Baa Baa Black Sheep)
by: Yui and Mommy Bunny
Rabbit, rabbit hopping in the garden
Rabbit, rabbit hop hop hop
One little carrot in the garden
And one little girl with a hopping bunny pet
Bear, bear, bear, bear
Pinky pinky bear
One little bear is in the pet shop
There’s a dog and there’s a rabbit
And lots and lots of teddy bears
I’m so proud at how she did her very first home work. Good job, baby! 🙂

Proud of her work
